On Process - 05/06/2012

Dee Dee is convinced that creative ability is a mental/physical manifestation as distinct as homosexuality or mathematic ability. Or eye color and athleticism.

I am more of the mind that everyone is an artist, but many either aren't aware of it, or aren't compelled to pursue it.

Either way, I am glad that I have finally found a way to satisfactorily express myself.

(I am especially thankful - having just finished "Moon and Sixpence"* - that I was able to come to this discovery sans wrenching personal trauma)

I draw almost every day largely without limitation or expectation. I usually fill 6-9 pages of sketchbooks during the week at work, taking tiny breaks all day long, scratching out things between spells at the keyboard.

At the end of the week, I scan in these pages and select out images that interest me. I spend time on weekends and after work coloring in Inkscape and posting to Botaday.

It is not all stream-of-consciousness. Ideas come to me and I work them also in short bouts of sketching. Sometimes the ideas are mixtures of pop-culture and mis-heard words and sometimes they are inspired by shapes I have already penned. I really like images that come together straight from the pen, but I am not opposed to employing pencil and eraser in pursuit of an illustration.

*I like to call it "Lunar Sixer"
